Michael Bisping Says He Might Retire After GSP Fight on November 4

Current UFC Middleweight Champion Michael "The Count" Bisping recently appeared on The MMA Hour and revealed that his upcoming fight against Georges "Rush" St-Pierre at UFC 217 on November 4 could end up being his retirement fight:

ā€œItā€™s an iconic arena (Madison Square Garden), itā€™s a big fight,ā€ Bisping said Monday on a special 400th edition of The MMA Hour. ā€œItā€™s Georges St-Pierre. Everybody knows who Georges St-Pierre is. Thereā€™s not many people who have crossed over from the MMA fanbase into the mainstream, and Georges, Iā€™d say heā€™s there. Maybe not as much as, say, a Conor (McGregor) or a Ronda (Rousey), but heā€™s not far behind, so itā€™s a big fight. And Georges brings a lot to the table. Heā€™s a tough challenge, and as a said, itā€™s a big fight. I think this is going to be the biggest MMA fight of the year. Thereā€™s three title fights on the event, so itā€™s a huge event.

ā€œAnd yeah, I think the career Iā€™ve had, the years Iā€™ve been in the UFC, the injuries Iā€™ve had, the ups and downs, getting close to title fights and all of this, thereā€™s a possibility ā€” this might be my last ever fight. I donā€™t know if Iā€™ll fight again after this. So, what a way to go out if it is.

Just, Iā€™ve been here for so long,ā€ Bisping explained. ā€œIā€™ve done it for so long now, and thereā€™s other things to do in life. I mean, I still love this, donā€™t get me wrong. But you canā€™t do it forever. You canā€™t do it forever, and Georges ā€” Georges shouldā€™ve stayed retired. He shouldā€™ve retired as a champion. Iā€™m going to beat Georges and Iā€™ll retire as a champion, maybe. I havenā€™t made my mind up on that yet. It depends.

ā€œIf thereā€™s enough money involved, maybe Iā€™ll stick around. But as of right now, I donā€™t know. My family wants me to retire. My wife wants me to retire. Thereā€™s a lot of people saying, ā€˜Mike, you should retire.ā€™ My manager says it. So everyoneā€™s in my ear saying, ā€˜Mike, you should retire, you should retire as champion.ā€™ Iā€™ve earned some money along the way, Iā€™ve had a great career, Iā€™ve represented my country. Iā€™ve achieved more through mixed martial arts than what I ever wouldā€™ve dreamed of. We canā€™t keep going forever. Youā€™ve got to know when the time is right, and Iā€™m not saying the time is right, but I am contemplating it.

"Itā€™s a 50/50 (chance I retire),ā€ Bisping said. ā€œIt may or may not be. But not because ā€” you know when you hear Dana (White) say, ā€˜When people start talking about retirement, that means theyā€™re done.ā€™ That doesnā€™t mean that at all. Iā€™m just trying to think smartly here, because you canā€™t do it forever. You really canā€™t. And youā€™ve got to know when to walk away.

ā€œNext year Iā€™ve got three acting projects lined up that are all big ā€” three big movies and a Netflix series. Iā€™ve got things going on outside the Octagon and Iā€™ve got money that I can earn outside of the Octagon. Ultimately, we do this for the money. Youā€™re doing this right now because you want to earn money. I fight in the UFC because I want to earn money. And if I can earn money outside of the Octagon thatā€™s just as good, that I donā€™t have to risk my health for, then it makes sense, and I can retire as the champion and parlay that into an active, successful career outside of the Octagon. And retiring a champion helps that. Retiring after you struggle through a ton of losses, and you once were champion and then you get seven shades of sh*t knocked out of you, youā€™re still making a payday ā€” Iā€™ve done myself an injustice there.

ā€œWeā€™ll see,ā€ Bisping said. ā€œIā€™m still enjoying it. Iā€™ve just had a great training session with (coach) Jason Parillo. Sparred five fives this morning, ran this morning. Iā€™m going to go train tonight. The fire is still there, Iā€™m still hungry as ever. I still love this sport and Iā€™m going to put a beating on GSP like heā€™s never experienced. Iā€™m going to remind him why he retired.ā€
