The Alternate Report: Why I'm Intrigued By CM Punk's Fight

I've never had much interest in the UFC. I've watched the odd ten-second clip of Rousey making an opponent tap out and a couple clips of Connor McGregor knock out his opponent that friends have shown me. Although, the CM Punk fight has really peaked my interest. Partly because CM Punk is involved and he is one of my all-time favourite wrestlers.

Although this isn't the only reason. As a pro wrestling fan, I love the responses from industry experts and the fans. Almost everyone is against CM Punk. All I hear is how CM Punk is going to be defeated in his first MMA fight.

As a pro wrestling fan, I love seeing these responses. These responses have created a story, a story we can follow up until the end of the fight.

CM Punk is the underdog in this fight. Mickey Gall is the favourite. This is a classic way to tell a story. Look at the movie industry, we see this story told time and time again in movies such as 'The Longest Yard', 'Coach Carter', '300' and 'Rocky'. The list goes on.

The underdog story is told so much in sports. I don't know if the UFC and Dana White wanted to tell this story in the lead up to the fight but in my opinion, it generates interest. Now people aren't just watching a fight. They are watching a story play out before them. Not everyone likes fighting, but almost everyone loves a story.

With the documentary series on CM Punk, we get to see more of that story unfold. We get to see Punk train to become a better fighter and potentially defeat Mickey Gall. Not only that we get to see Punk struggle. The struggle of a character is a huge part of storytelling.

Just look at 'Lord Of The Rings' by J.R.R. Tolkien. Frodo should never have been able to travel across Middle Earth, across Mordor and destroy the One Ring, but he did, despite the struggle he faced he did it.

This is no different from stories that are presented in pro wrestling. An Example, when Daniel Bryan won the main event at Wrestlemania and became the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Now we see the story presented in the form of a fight in the UFC. This isn't the first time we've seen this story laid out in the form of a sporting competition. Since the beginning of professional sports, this story has been presented.

From the opinion of someone who doesn't watch UFC, CM Punks fight is the most exciting fight I've been aware of. More exciting than Connor McGregor and Nate Diaz. When there's a story being told the stakes seem higher. Will CM Punk get his MMA career of to a good start with a huge win despite the odds being against him? Or will Mickey Gall prevail, proving the majority to be right about Punk?

I don't know what the outcome of the fight will be, but what I do know is; No matter the result, whether Punk wins or losses, the story being told is intriguing and sometime down the line it would make for a great Biopic.
