The John Report: The WWE Raw Deal 10/27/14

TJR/Melo Man

Live from San Antonio, Texas this is the Raw Deal for episode #1118. Follow me on Twitter @johnreport. Thanks to my buddy Melo Man for the awesome banner you see above as well as all my banners!

You can check out my Hell in a Cell recap if you missed it. I also wrote about the 10 things WWE did right at Hell in a Cell at WhatCulture, so give that a look too!

There was a video package that focused on the big events from Hell in a Cell.

There was a promo from Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and Kane. They said nothing interesting. They brought out Seth Rollins, who was victorious in the main event of Hell in a Cell one night earlier.

Rollins entered the ring along with J&J Security: Noble & Mercury. He said that things are over with him and Dean Ambrose now because he won their match. Now that he's done with Ambrose, he sees the man that defeated Randy Orton at HIAC, that's John Cena. There were dueling "Let's Go Cena/Cena Sucks" chants as Rollins reacted to them by saying "blah blah blah" and they shut up. Rollins said later in the show he's going to see Cena just like the fans are going to see Rollins leaving Cena lying in a puddle of his own failure.

Randy Orton's music started up. He marched down to the ring. Orton was all fired up and talking fast. He was ranting about how angry he was, even referencing that he went to anger management in 2006 for real. Orton said he was still mad about Rollins attacking him on Raw last week. He tried to get at Rollins, but the others in the ring broke it up. Hunter said they're not going to do this tonight. Orton said he'll only stop when Rollins is dead. Hunter told Orton to go on his bus and take the night off. Fans were chanting RKO at him. Orton slipped by Hunter and hit a RKO on Rollins out of nowhere. The crowd cheered. Orton quickly ran up the ramp by himself. Rollins was upset about it and the Authority slowly left the ring as a group.

Analysis: That was well done. The crowd was ready to cheer for Orton in that situation and they gave him a reason to cheer with that RKO on Rollins. It was the perfect move in that spot and the fact that it came out of nowhere in a situation where Hunter was trying to calm him down made it work even better. If that's not the official face turn for Orton then it's obviously coming very soon.

Later in the show is Cena vs. Rollins, plus Hulk Hogan and Mark Henry teams with Big Show against Stardust & Goldust for the tag titles.

(Commercial)

Prior to the tag title match, we heard some strategy with Show talking to Henry before the match. Show said Henry's presence distracted him.

Tag Team Titles: Goldust & Stardust vs. Mark Henry & Big Show

The Henry/Show tag team should be called the Team That Let America Down aka TTLAD. I don't think that name is getting over. Just a hunch. Henry nailed Goldust with a clothesline. JBL said "there's no second place in America" that's why they're teaming up. Bizarre statement, but I get his point. Show nailed Stardust with some huge chops. There was a "Sexual Chocolate" chant in there. Henry knocked down Stardust with a big punch. Show tagged himself in and Henry wasn't happy about it. Henry: "You tagged me like you don't know me!" Good line. They argued about it. The show went to break.

(Commercial)

Back from break, Goldust was working over Show until Show slammed him down and applied his new leg lock submission hold. Henry received the tag against Stardust. That didn't last long after Stardust hit a chop block on Henry's left leg. The heels isolated Henry in their corner. Show tagged in and he cleaned house. Show hit a running Spear on Stardust. He set up the fist and did the KO Punch on Stardust. He dumped Goldust outside the ring. Henry went into the ring, picked up Show and gave him the World's Strongest Slam. He put Stardust on top of Show for the win after 11 minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Goldust & Stardust

Analysis: *1/2 There's the obvious heel turn that everybody has been waiting for. Everybody knew it was coming except Big Show, who is the dumb babyface in the scenario. The champs retain in a match where the titles never should have been on the line anyway. It was still a good angle.

Post match, Henry hit the World's Strongest Slam on Show. Then he did it again so three slams on him. The fans actually told him to do it again. With Show out on the mat, Henry hit the big splash to keep him down for good. Henry left up the ramp proud of his work. He yelled his famous "that's what I do" line. Show looked on surprised at ringside.

Analysis: Good post match beating by Henry. He didn't do as much trash talk as usual, but he looked mean like he was supposed to. I've always liked Henry better as a heel, so I'm all for it.

Thanks to my graphics buddy Melo Man for making that.

The announcers talked about what happened. Of course Jerry Lawler was surprised by it even though he's been in wrestling for over 40 years. I love how he has to react to things like an eight year old kid that has never watched wrestling before.

Roman Reigns interview up next.

(Commercial)

Backstage, Mark Henry told Renee Young that Big Show was jealous of him. He said he always has been and always will be. Then he walked away to cause some more anal bleeding. Yeah I said it.

There was a video package for Roman Reigns. Cole said that people call him The Juggernaut. Who? When? I didn't know that was his name.

Roman Reigns did an interview via satellite with the announcers at ringside. He said he feels stronger every single day. When asked about the Ambrose/Rollins match, he said he knew Ambrose would bring the fight because that's his boy. He knew that Rollins would hide too. Reigns said that when he's medically he's going to make Rollins "the past" instead of the future. Believe that.

Analysis: It was just a short interview that went about one minute long. Reigns is out after a hernia surgery. He could be ready by Survivor Series at the end of November although that's not a lock.

The Divas Champion AJ Lee entered for a match.

(Commercial)

Paige joined the commentary team for this match since she is friends with Alicia Fox.

AJ Lee vs. Alicia Fox

Fox was in control early as Paige mentioned that Fox cost her the match at HIAC. Northern Lights Suplex by Fox for two. The crowd was pretty dead for this one as Fox applied a headlock. AJ did a nice counter out of the headlock with a spinning DDT to create some space. Fox came back with a spinning backbreaker. Paige shoved Fox while the ref was checking on AJ. You know what that distraction mans? AJ gets the win with the ROLLUP OF DEATH that ends so many divas matches. It went four minutes.

Winner by pinfall: AJ Lee

Analysis: * It was a typical divas match. Not that long. AJ was selling for most of it and got the win using the rollup that few divas ever seem to kick out of. Whoever books diva match finishes must really love those rollup finishes.

Post match, Paige tried to give Alicia a bracelet to say she's sorry. Instead, she kicked Alicia. Paige sent her out of the ring, tossed her into the barricade and then did a slingshot into the barricade. Lawler went over to check on Fox because nobody else would. Paige left.

Analysis: That Paige/Fox alliance lasted about one month. It puts Paige over as a sore loser. That means the woman that lost the Divas Title match (Paige) gets a feud with Alicia while the champion has no feud. At least for now. That could be okay for now since Survivor Series tends to have tag matches.

It's Ambrose vs. Cesaro later, but up next is John Cena to talk to us.

(Commercial)

John Cena entered for some promo time at the top of hour two.

John Cena Promo Time

He sucked up to the local fans by mentioning the San Antonio Spurs as NBA Champions just like last week he sucked up to KC Royals fans. Cena said it may not have been the last chapter in Cena vs. Orton, but it was one of the best. He spoke about how they went through hell to have the opportunity to face the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. Because of the win, Cena gets to face Lesnar at some point. Cena said that while Lesnar thinks he's a champion, he's there fighting like a champion and the next time they have a match Lesnar is going to lose. He added that everything he does is going to be a statement against Lesnar. Tonight in San Antonio, Texas (more sucking up) he gets Seth Rollins. He said tonight Cena goes through the future because Rollins is going to go face to face with the man that runs the place. He was cut off by Stephanie McMahon's music.

Stephanie walked down to the ring alone. She congratulated Cena on his victory and said that she can't wait for the main event against Rollins. She also said we can't wait for Survivor Series for a traditional elimination match that can be seen on the WWE Network for just $9.99 (Cena said that part). Stephanie wondered why he had to suck up to the fans to get cheers and mentioned that even she could do it as she said San Antonio a few times. Cena said he was just listening to the people. She wondered if he hears them saying Cena sucks. She wanted to talk him about what's best for business. Stephanie said the people don't matter. She told Cena he could join The Authority and he would be appreciated by them. Stephanie said that The Authority could guarantee him a victory against Lesnar. She said Cena deserve the accolades, the respect and to be a part of a family. She wanted him to be the captain of The Authority's team at Survivor Series. Cena said all he deserved is to get in the ring to tell the fans that he loves doing this. Cena fired up a part of the crowd. He said the fans weren't here for him; he was there for all of them. He told her "hell no" at the idea of joining The Authority.

Triple H's music started up and he walked to the ring. Hunter mocked Cena's speech. He added that Cena's been there 12 years and Hunter's been there 20, but it gets harder every single year. Hunter told him he's hanging on by a thread because he knows that Cena can't fight the future. Hunter told Cena it doesn't have to be as hard as it is for him right now. Hunter said that Cena has a lot of heart, but he has to use his mind for this. Hunter's message was that Cena cannot stop the future. Hunter said they would have Team Authority and that Cena can find guys that want to stand up next to Cena against Team Authority. Hunter kept mentioning the future as he said that The Authority controls the future. He told Cena to realize that The Authority always wins.

Analysis: That was a 15 minute promo that felt like it was 25 minutes. It just kept dragging on. It wasn't bad. They just felt the need to repeat everything a few times. We know Cena does it for the fans. He says it all the time. Can this show go back to being two hours please? How many times did Hunter say "future" in that promo? We get it. You need to drive that word home. It was too much. They didn't say if it was 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 for the match. Since they said traditional that usually means 5 on 5 match. It also means no Lesnar at Survivor Series. A tag match main event? That's a hard sell as a top match.

Another reminder that it's Cena vs. Rollins coming up. Hey WWE, is Rollins the future? You didn't tell me yet. Let me know the WWE Network price while you're at it.

(Commercial)

The Usos vs. The Miz & Damien Mizdow

When a tag match happens usually the face team is opposite the camera, but in this case it's The Miz' team that is because they want to feature Mizdow's reactions on camera. The crowd was cheering for Mizdow, who mimicked Miz like usual. Usos hit a clothesline to take Miz out so Mizdow sold it by also laying on the floor. The Usos hit dives at the same time to take them out for the vintage floor to commercial break.

(Commercial)

The heels isolated Jey as Miz hit a nice DDT on him. Mizdow hit a suplex and then hit a Miz like DDT of his own. There were more quick tags between the heels. Jimmy received the hot tag and was on fire with a Samoan Drop on Miz. Jimmy hit a cross body block on Miz for two. Jimmy got a rollup, but Mizdow kicked him to break it up. Jey switched spots with Jimmy, then he snuck in an inside cradle for the win after 11 minutes. It's not the same as a rollup, but it is a surprise finish.

Winners by pinfall: The Usos

Post match, Miz & Mizdow were furious of the replay. The ref told them he just counted what he saw.

Analysis: ** That was a crafty finish. They don't do it too often, so I don't mind it. It was mostly a comedy match. The Mizdow act is good, but they'll need to do the payoff with Sandow turning face soon because they are in danger of overdoing the act.

John Cena was talking to Dolph Ziggler backstage. We couldn't hear them, but they shook hands.

(Commercial)

Dolph Ziggler was shown walking backstage. Kane said there was a report that Ziggler was seen talking to Cena. A report? It was on the television show that you are currently on. He put himself in a match with Ziggler.

Analysis: They're pushing the idea that anybody that joins Cena is going to have to pay the price for it.

Hulk Hogan entered the ring. He rambled on doing his usual thing talking about how Cena was going to beat Lesnar. He mentioned the Susan G. Komen organization that WWE is working with for the month of October. He pointed out some breast cancer survivors in the crowd. That was it. The women went into the ring with Hogan. The announcers plugged Komen.org/WWE again.

Analysis: It's the last Raw of October, so this was WWE's way of putting a wrap on breast cancer awareness month.

Bo Dallas was shown walking backstage.

(Commercial)

Dallas entered the ring saying he issued an open challenge. Now it's time to see who "bolieves" they can beat him. Ryback's music hit as he made his return after having some surgeries. Fans cheered for him. He's back as a babyface.

Ryback vs. Bo Dallas

Ryback has "Big Guy" on the front of his singlet and looks more muscular than ever. There were "Feed Me More" chants. Ryback hit a Gorilla Press slam, then a spinebuster and the crowd chanted "feed me more" as he hit the clothesline. Ryback hit Shellshock for the finish for the easy win after one minute.

Winner by pinfall: Ryback

Analysis: It was just a squash match to show that Ryback is back. He'll probably get a bunch of easy wins in the next few weeks to re-establish him as a face. He was at his best as a babyface, so it's smart to bring him back in that role. The heel role he had and the team with Curtis Axel was okay although not great. The babyface side of the roster is pretty deep right now, so it may be tough for Ryback to climb the ranks quickly. If they really want to push him hard they should put him on Cena's team at Survivor Series.

Dean Ambrose is up next.

(Commercial)

Plug Time: This Tuesday at 10pmET it's TJR Radio episode #52 with our guest, former WWE and TNA wrestler Matt Morgan. My co-hosts are The Ace and Justin Seagull. We'll do the show for about 90 minutes or so with Matt joining us for about an hour. We'll talk about current wrestling, what he's up to these days, there will be some discussion about the NFL because we're all big fans and we'll answer any questions that our listeners may have. If you can't listen live that TJR Radio link will work after it's over.

This Tuesday on Main Event it's Miz TV with Mark Henry as a guest.

Cesaro made his entrance as the announcers went over main stories on the show as we neared the top of hour three. Dean Ambrose angrily walked down to the ring as a video package aired showing his loss to Seth Rollins one night earlier.

Ambrose did a promo on the announce table saying he went to straight to hell and loved every second of it. He said when he got to hell he found Bray Wyatt. He doesn't know why Wyatt did what he did and he doesn't care. Ambrose said the laws of the jungle say don't mess with an animal that has claws sharper than yours and you don't mess with Dean Ambrose. Ambrose went after Cesaro and attacked him with the microphone.

They fought up the aisle with Cesaro trying to get away, but Ambrose kept attacking him with the microphone. The ref tried to stop it at the top of the ramp. Ambrose went back into the ring. Ambrose wanted to know where Wyatt was so he could kick his ass.

Wyatt appeared on the video screen. He said that they're both victims of a system that make men torture. This world is not made for them. He wonders what happens next and understands that he is not Dean's brother or friend. It seems like he knows him. He's going to dismantle his mind. Wyatt told him to run to end the segment.

Analysis: No match. Ambrose was angry, so he just attacked Cesaro and they'll probably do that match again soon. Wyatt's promo was fine although it would have been nice to see him in person. That wasn't a strong enough follow up to the main event of Hell in a Cell.

The announcers talked about earlier events again. It feels like this show is setting a record in terms of saying "earlier in the show" or maybe I'm just bored by things.

Nikki Bella was accompanied by her personal assistant Brie.

(Commercial)

Nikki Bella (w/Brie Bella) vs. Naomi

Nikki hit a slam early to control the action. I love how they mention Total Divas, yet don't mention Nikki is dating Cena. Wouldn't ultimate good guy Cena be mad that his girlfriend is being so mean to her own sister? It's just inconsistent of WWE to use Total Divas sometimes and then completely ignore it. I'm sorry for thinking. Back to the match. Nikki yanked Naomi off the ropes causing her to land hard. Clothesline by Nikki and then an awkward looking chinlock. Naomi made a comeback with a dropkick, then a leaping clothesline and a full nelson slam. A running knee attack earned a two count. Apparently flying knees are not as tough as her flying ass move. Brie reluctantly held Naomi's leg behind the ref's back, so Nikki hit a forearm shot. Nikki hit a Rack Attack for the pinfall win after four minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Nikki Bella

Analysis: * The story was about Brie being upset that she had to help her sister cheat to win. I assume this is leading to Nikki becoming the next contender for the Divas Title. Then again, they might just do a divas tag at Survivor Series like they usually do.

Ziggler vs. Kane up next.

(Commercial)

Kane vs. Dolph Ziggler

This is not for Ziggler's IC Title. Kane hit a shoulder block early on followed by a kick to the head as the announcers bickered about things and made me want to hit mute. Kane continued on offense with several chinlocks to really slow things down. Ziggler hit a dropkick while Kane was on the apron, which sent Kane to the floor and set up the vintage floor to commercial break.

(Commercial)

Ziggler countered a power move into a facebuster, but Kane nailed him with an uppercut punch to prevent the comeback. Running seated dropkick by Kane for two. Another chinlock by Kane and knee to the gut knocked Ziggler down. Ziggler made a comeback with a dropkick to the knee. Ziggler hit a neckbreaker as the crowd cheered in support of him. Sidewalk slam by Kane for two. Kane missed his clothesline off the top (it took 17 years for people to avoid that move) and Ziggler hit a Fameasser for two. Ziggler avoided a Chokeslam and hit a Superkick, but Kane came back with a boot to the face for two. Kane went for a Chokeslam that Ziggler countered into a sunset flip for the pinfall win after 14 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Dolph Ziggler

Analysis: ** It was an average match that ran a little long although the finish was well done. A champion won a non-title match? That's so rare. It's a swerve! Then again, Kane almost never wins anymore even though they try to present him as a top guy. Ziggler worked as the smaller, quicker guy that had to come back to find a way to win. Usually if Ziggler has a match that long it's better, but it's tough with a nearly 50 year old Kane.

Post match, Seth Rollins attacked Ziggler from behind. They put Ziggler in the ring and he was double teamed by Rollins and Kane. John Cena ran down to the ring to save Ziggler before they could do any damage. Cena hit a clothesline on Kane to knock him out of the ring while Rollins left up the ramp with his security buddies.

Analysis: It's nice to see Cena out there to help his new buddy Ziggler. It's also convenient because his main event match is next.

(Commercial)

This week on Smackdown it's a Halloween Special since Friday is Halloween. They advertised a Divas Halloween Costume Battle Royal with images of 12 divas on the screen.

The announcers plugged the WWE 2K15 video game that comes out today although it's not on the PS4 and Xbox One yet.

John Cena vs. Seth Rollins (w/Joey Mercury & Jamie Noble)

Rollins was selling Hell in a Cell with taped ribs and moving gingerly while Cena looked like he wasn't even hurt at all because he's Super Cena of course. Arm drag by Cena led to Rollins taking a break on the floor. When Cena punched him in the ribs, Rollins tried to run away again except that Cena stopped him. Rollins hit a cheap shot outside the ring and then a clothesline in the ring. With Rollins distracting the ref, Mercury punched Cena in the face for a two count. There was more interference by J&J Security outside the ring followed by Rollins hitting a suplex on the floor. Rollins hit a forearm smash in the ring. Rollins hit a flipping neckbreaker (or blockbuster) off the middle rope for two as they went to break there.

(Commercial)

Back from break, Cena tried a comeback although Rollins came back by whipping Cena into the steel steps. In the ring, Cena hit one shoulder tackle in his comeback and Rollins moved out of the way of another one. Rollins hit a dive on Cena outside the ring, but Rollins ended up hitting his injured ribs against the announce table. Cena hit a cross body block. Rollins came back with a DDT for two. Outside the ring, Rollins whipped Cena into the barricade. In the ring, Rollins hit a flying knee attack off the top rope for a two count. Dropkick by Rollins. Noble got some stomps on Cena without the ref seeing. Cena did his usual comeback offense. J&J tried to interfere, so Cena gave Rollins a back drop over the top onto both of them. Back in the ring, Rollins hit an enziguiri for two. Cena hit a Tornado DDT off the middle ropes for two. They exchanged some holds and Rollins hit a reverse neckbreaker. Awesome move for a two count. Fans chanted "this is awesome" for it. Rollins gave Cena a Powerbomb into the turnbuckle for a two count. Love that spot. Cena tripped up Rollins when he went for a Curb Stomp and Cena applied the STF. Rollins was waving for help, so here comes Kane to break things up after 22 minutes of action. The ref rang the bell for the DQ finish.

Winner by Disqualification: John Cena

Analysis: ***1/2 They had a very good, competitive match before the DQ. It was great at the end. They've been working together on house shows for the last month or so. You could see they've developed chemistry. A 22 minute main event is long for Raw although the DQ finish is disappointing. It's also what we expect. They have done way too many Raw finishes with DQ endings. Fans shouldn't get invested in big matches on Raw because we know that the screw finishes always happen. Even at Hell in a Cell the main event didn't have a clean finish. If they want the matches to matter more, they need to work on having better finishes. Once in a while a DQ is fine, but it happens nearly every week. It was still a really good match. Rollins is one of the best in-ring performers in WWE while Cena was solid too.

Post match, Kane put the boots to Cena until Dolph Ziggler made the save for his new buddy. J&J got into the ring to join the fight. Other heels ran out to the ring. Then the babyfaces. The ring was full of wrestlers brawling while Rollins escaped to the top of the ramp. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon stood beside him on the ramp. The ring was full of midcarders brawling in the ring and around ringside. No sign of Randy Orton. Everybody was on the floor except Heath Slater and Bo Dallas, both of whom received the Attitude Adjustment by Cena. Everybody else was brawling on the floor as Cena posed in the ring alone while The Authority looked on from the ramp. Raw ended like that.

Analysis: It sets up the idea that there are people that want to face off with The Authority although they are not going to give it away. That's always a good way to end Raw because the fans cheer when they see 30 guys brawling around the ringside area. It also suggests that things are chaotic in WWE although really things are pretty tame with the lack of creative booking they have.

Randy Orton was noticeably absent at the end of it. Most likely they're going to book him as a heel going into Survivor Series and put him on The Authority team. He could turn babyface during the match, which would screw over the group and give the win to Cena's team. The bad thing about this angle is they're going to spend four weeks picking partners for Cena. If the WWE Title was in the picture then the Team Cena story would be resolved in a week because they would have other things to worry about. Instead they're going to play it out for a month. Is a Survivor Series elimination tag match really strong enough as a major main event match? I'm not sure about that.

Three Stars of the Show

1. Seth Rollins - Match of the night by far.

2. John Cena - Same as above.

3. Mark Henry - I like him better as a heel. It was obvious, but the turn was well done.

The Scoreboard

5 out of 10

Last week: 6.5

2014 Average: 5.95

2014 High: 9 (April 7 & June 30)

2014 Low: 3 (September 1)

Last 5 Weeks: 6.5, 6, 5.5, 5, 4

Final Thoughts

It gets a 5 out of 10, which might be generous on my part. Since the main event was a very good match that went over 20 minutes it saved the show from being a 3 out of 10.

I was bored by most of it. Things are pretty stale in WWE right now and this show was a perfect example of that.

The heel turn by Mark Henry was well done although it was obvious. He's much better in that role, so I don't mind seeing him as a heel. It wouldn't be a surprise if both guys are a part of that Team Authority vs. Team Cena match either. Then again they could just be in a singles match.

Bray Wyatt should have been on the show in the arena instead on the video screen. We haven't seen him in the ring in a while, so maybe his presence would help.

Rusev was absent. He's been on nearly every week since WrestleMania. Not sure what his next feud will be. Maybe Sheamus. Perhaps he'll be on Team Authority although I could see him being left out of that match too.

Survivor Series is going to need more of a hook than simply having a tag team match in the main event. With no WWE Title on the line, they really have to find a way to make it interesting. Good luck to WWE.
