The Story of the Monday Night Wars

Posted by: Wrestling-Radio.com

'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it' -George Santayana From his work; Life of Reason, Reason in Common Sense 1905.

There has never been a more meaningful, profitable, emotional, tragic or exciting time in the world of professional wrestling than the era known as the Monday Night War. Not before or since. The Monday Night War era officially started when WcW Monday Nitro began on September 5, 1995. No one thought it was going to be a very significant program, not to mention just how serious an impact it was going to make. It started out as a notch on the TNT fall schedule, and within two years, almost put the WWE (then WWF) out of business.

@Frankenstein - Excuse me? WCW's ratings didn't tank towards the end? Special events weren't canceled and a television executive didn't deliver the death blow? Never mind that BOTH of these facts are detailed in the excellent book "The Death of WCW," how about the fact that Eric Bischoff himself on the Monday Night Wars DVD said that an AOL exec decided to get rid of wrestling on TNT and TBS, which is the reason he didn't buy the brand? Do your research, kid, and then come talk to me. Check out the World Championship Wrestling and Monday Night Wars articles on Wikipedia, the "Monday Night Wars" and "Rise and Fall of WCW" DVDs, or the book "The Death of WCW" if you don't want to take my word for it. Next time you're going to tell somebody they're wrong, you'd better make sure you know what you're talking about before trying to argue your point with somebody who's studied the subject extensively.

WWE SUX ASS, your nick name is as bad as your comments...do you think TNA is more real than WWE??If yes then you just an iditot also. Both are fake but if you ask me WWE Superstars are better athlete's, the only one they miss is AJ Styles wich I hope signs with WWE during this WAR :-P Have all a great day and enjoy wrestling for what it is and not what it's not!

@boredwrestlingfan.. you're wrong moron. WCW was not down in the ratings, in fact, ratings were higher than WWE. And no one told Ted to get wrestling off the network. And he wasn't forced like you said because of ratings. That's complete rubbish. @WWE SUX ASS ... most of what you say is accurate. i agree, Bischoff should of bought WWE but his finances didn't come through. Vince came along and bought it, then destroyed wrestling. just remember everyone, WCW almost did put WWE out of business. wished it would of happen.

woah, woah, woah, such hostility towards Vince McMahon in the previous comment. Truth be told, by 2001, WCW was way down in the ratings. Add to this the fact that Time Warner merged with AOL, and you've got the real story here. Jamie Kellner, a programming exec who also is responsible for the death of one of my favorite cartoons (Pinky and the Brain, if you're wondering), came in and told them to get wrestling off Turner networks. Ted Turner didn't decide he wanted out of the wrestling business, Ted Turner was forced out by poor ratings and one individual's poor perception of professional wrestling. You may hate WWE or Vince McMahon, but the fact remains that even if Kellner never came along and rid TNT and TBS of professional wrestling, the WWF was still destroying their competition by 2000-2001. Credit where it's due, WCW had a great run, but they couldn't make it last in the long run.

do you hear that kids? WCW almost put WWF (now WWE) out of business. lucky ted turner sold his business. not that WCW was doing bad, its just that ted turner the past owner of WCW had other projects in the making and wanted out of the wrestling business. lucky you vince mcmahon you fucking bastard, otherwise you would of been out of business long ago. true fact. if ted turner kept WCW, WWF would of been out of business back around 2001-2002, thats why every true wrestling fan, every true WCW fan, every true new japan wrestling FAN, every true Puerto Rico wrestling FAN, every true 'REAL' wrestling fan DISLIKES or HATES vince mcmahon. Wwe is crap. Wwe is 'ENTERTAINMENT', which means 'FAKE' ... did i mention 'FAKE' .... vince ruined everything. vince should die. honestly, he's nothing but a piece of fucking crap and so is his company Wwe. only wished Eric Bischoff would of had financial back-up to purchase WCW back in 2001. but he didn't. oh well... life goes on. lets all hope the best for TNA!!!!
